Neural networks for speech separation for binaural hearing aids

چکیده
This paper deals with the use of neural networks for separating speech from other noisy sources in binaural hearing aids. In sound separation systems implemented in binaural hearing aids, the right and left hearing aids need to transmit to each other some parameters involved in the speech separation algorithm. The problem is that this transmission reduces the battery life, which is one of the most important constrain for designing advanced algorithms in hearing aids. In order to solve this problem, we use an adequate number of quantization bits for the parameters to be transmitted from one hearing aid to the other, trying to keep the performance as good as possible by means of a neural network, in the effort of finding a balance between low bit rate (and thus, low power consumption) and good separation of speech. Key–Words: Binaural hearing aids, statistical signal processing, speech-processing, low computational cost.

Rate-constrained source separation for speech enhancement in wireless-communicated binaural hearing aids
A recent trend in hearing aids is the connection of the left and right devices to collaborate between them. Binaural systems can provide natural binaural hearing and support the improvement of speech intelligibility in noise, but they require data transmission between both devices, which increases the power consumption. This paper presents a novel sound source separation algorithm for binaural ...
متن کاملBinaural Reverberant Speech Separation Based on Deep Neural Networks
Supervised learning has exhibited great potential for speech separation in recent years. In this paper, we focus on separating target speech in reverberant conditions from binaural inputs using supervised learning. Specifically, deep neural network (DNN) is constructed to map from both spectral and spatial features to a training target. For spectral features extraction, we first convert binaura...
متن کاملA binaural short time objective intelligibility measure for noisy and enhanced speech
Objective intelligibility measures are increasingly being used to assess the performance of speech processing algorithms, e.g. for hearing aids. It has been shown that the short time objective intelligibility (STOI) measure yields good results in this respect. In this paper we propose a binaural extension of the STOI measure, which predicts binaural advantage using a modified equalization cance...
متن کاملEvaluation method for hearing aid fitting under reverberation: comparison between monaural and binaural hearing aids.
Some hearing-impaired persons with hearing aids complain of listening difficulty under reverberation. No method, however, is currently available for hearing aid fitting that permits evaluation of hearing difficulty caused by reverberations. In this study, we produced speech materials with a reverberation time of 2.02 s that mimicked a reverberant environment (a classroom). Speech materials with...
متن کاملImproving Speech Intelligibility in Binaural Hearing Aids by Estimating a Time-Frequency Mask with a Weighted Least Squares Classifier
An efficient algorithm for speech enhancement in binaural hearing aids is proposed. The algorithm is based on the estimation of a time-frequency mask using supervised machine learning. The standard least-squares linear classifier is reformulated to optimize a metric related to speech/noise separation. The method is energy-efficient in two ways: the computational complexity is limited and the wi...
